PWDT & NHAdrian presents

The Zlín Z-142

for X-Plane 11.41+

History:

This series of two seat trainer and four seat light aircraft was initially developed to replace the successful Zlin Trener series. The initial Z-42 was developed during the mid-1960s with two seats, side by side. It flew for the first time on the 17th of October, 1967.

The improved Zlin Z-42M introduced a constant speed propeller, a larger tail developed for the Zlin Z-43 four-seater and replaced the Z-42 in production in 1974. Development of the two seat line continued with the further improved Z-142, which flew for the first time on the 29th of December, 1979. Changes introduced included a larger cockpit canopy and faired undercarriage. The Z-142 remained in production in Z-142C form until the mid-'90s. The latest two seater of this family, the Z-242 L has a 150kW (200hp) Textron Lycoming AEIO-360 flat-four powered engine.

Changes aside from the engine include a three-blade constant speed prop and revised engine cowling profile. First flight was on the 14th February 1990. Development of the four-seat models, the Z-43 and Z-143, was followed by the two-seaters. The Z-43 appeared a year later than the Z-42, flying for the first time on the 10th December 1968. The Z-42 and Z-43 share the same basic airframe, but the Z-43 features a larger and wider cabin with seating for four and a more powerful engine. The current Z-143L flew for the first time on the 24th of April, 1992. It has a similar structure as the Z-242L, but alike the Z-43 it has a larger cabin with seating for four and a more powerful Textron Lycoming O-540 engine.

About X-Plane model:

Once upon a time in the Flight Simulator's world, there was a Zlin 142 for FSX. This free Zlin looks pretty nice in that era, but the time had gone by, and almost everything changed since. We got P3D3 and X-Plane 10 and later P3D4 and X-Plane 11. The feeling to convert this good old stuff into X-Plane grew stronger and stronger, but to have it with more features, quality textures, last but not least - a much more realistic flight model.

Luckily, I met with Adrián Nagy-Hinst - author of the well known Carenado Cessna C-152 mod - who kindly offered his help to make this project happen. All of the custom features that you'll discover in this Zlin is Adrián's merit and I can't be grateful enough for him. Well, after almost a year of development, finally we got a far-far better add-on compared to the old FSX version ever was! The model contains 350.231 polygons, a lot of custom animations, features, special 3D modelled gauges and full 4K resolution PBR textures.

Features built-in pre-configured Librain effects, custom FMOD sounds - recorded from real Zlín aircraft, a very accurate flight model tested by real Z-142 pilots and instructors. In this pack, you can find 6 various liveries, and one pure white for the talented repainters. An AI version of the Zlin also included for the better experience.

Features:

  • Highly optimized 3D model
  • 4K high detailed PBR textures
  • Realistic flight model - tested by real Zlin pilots
  • Realistic custom FMOD sounds - recorded from real M-337AK engine
  • Custom animations
  • Full 3D virtual cockpit
  • Full 3D instruments
  • Built-in Librain effect
  • RealityXP support
  • iPad with AviTab
  • Special 3D cabin lights
  • Setup Sheet for aircraft configuring (Payloads, weights, etc.)
  • Two panel layout (Eastern and Western style)

Special thanks to:

All of our Beta-testers who helped a lot in our development. Thank you so much, Guys!

This is even better than the Aerobask Robin DR401 and I really, really like that one! Better than most of my payware. The attention to detail is beyond belief. The different panels for different languages, the overhead adjustable instrument flood light, the sounds, the realistic pilot in his leather flight jacket is so amazing, and a very well done and complete manual. The choice of "old school" radio navigation" or GPS is such a great idea. Then there is the unique paper pad for doing the setup, that really adds to the immersion and the ease of setup. I also liked the panel lighting that fades from green glow to red when you adjust the lights for night. Thank you very, very much. You made this old man's day for sure.

I recently bought a brand new offer from the store, a <cough> low-wing SEP payware aircraft and boy was I underwhelmed again.  Apart from some less ubiquitous avionics (that don't necessarily work right) it has so little to offer for the eye, it doesn't do VR, it may use the FMOD engine as advertised but it doesn't use its capabilities in any way.  In short, it was a disappointment,  not only because I have a few freeware offers that run circles around that thing.

Enter the Z-142.  OK, I see a few screws on the panel that are just images, not 3D objects but it all looks authentic, shows some nice wear and tear and the first impression was "wow, that's different!". The Zlin surprises you with labels in a language you may have heard of, but little ways to understand it intuitively and there's just no way you get that thing off the ground without reading the manual, not only because it doesn't follow "western standards" of placing or coloring things.  Once you identified the knobs and levers and hit the start button, you will be greeted by a startup sound, and then a nice roar from the engine.  It still sounds a bit stitched together as there is little or no transition between the sound files but boy! is this better than the aforementioned payware offer!

Because I still didn't identify the prop lever correctly, the takeoff run was a bit longer than expected but once in the air and with the prop turning fast enough, it climbed away quite nicely, particularly when I remembered that the "5" stands for 500m/min (1500ft/min), not 500ft/min. :)  There's no autopilot and hand-flying it is no problem, but you'll soon understand all the clues given to you much better, such as the plane being a 2-seater and having stubby little wings, with the first incarnation of the type named "Trener", but it wasn't meant to train people to fly Cessnas.  While it does have more stability than a fighter plane, it's small and quite agile and invited me to do a few rolls, which it performed with some still comfy rotation rates.  Doing a hammerhead, or in this case rather a true stall turn just for kicks, it made a textbook turn on top of it all on its own, with me just sitting there doing nothing and being stunned, because of all the things I expected, this was not one of them.

I do have the marvelous SF-260 for my occasional fits of playing roller coaster to compare the Zlin with, and it's nice to see how both models reflect the differences in construction and role of both aircraft.  The Zlin is less of a thoroughbred, tamer, slower but it does have quite some personality and I immediately liked it very much!  On top of all that physical presence and the nice in-cockpit touches, it comes with librain support, an onboard configuration gimmick and other stuff that people expect (but not always get) from a nice payware plane - for free!  And all this works nicely in VR, with the one exception maybe that the floorboard switches react to the controllers in reverse (you have to swipe the controller down in order to flip the switch upwards from its down position).

Speaking of which... I too completely missed the release of this plane and got notified by a post in the VR forum here, stating that the Zlin is a fun aircraft in VR (but no further information why, where to get it etc.).  So after finding out where to get it I did that first spin in VR of course, and I don't know why but aircraft like the Robin DR-401 or the SF-260 are particularly fun to fly in VR, and the Zlin is indeed as much fun in VR as those.  Maybe it's the bubble canopies giving free sight to the skies, or the low wings giving you an additional cue for distinguishing between "up here" and "down there" but at any rate the biggest part of it is how well these planes are made!  After all, the aforementioned disappointing purchase was a low-wing aircraft too, but it didn't give me that kick. The Zlin on the other hand is something you can really feel, it gives you an experience and it's challenging you a bit, it feels alive and so it's certainly an early contender for the "plane of the year" competition!  Thank you for this exceptional aircraft!

Thanks a lot for this beautiful and fun to fly plane!

A small hint for other pilots: don't open the canopy during flight  😋

Very beautiful recreation of this aircraft, it is truly payware quality. I'd even argue that it's better than payware quality, as there are many little things to this addon, such as being able to cover gauges and labeling them inoperable.

My only complaint is that I can't get the artificial horizon (attitude indicator) to work. It's there, but it doesn't move up or down/roll left and right at all.

EDIT: I got it to work, so no complaints about this aircraft now

This is a really great aircraft, very well done! Flight characteristics are brilliant, I think the cockpit textures look great as does the exterior. FMOD sounds provide good immersion. Great aircraft, exceeds the quality of some of the payware options available for similar types, the Yak-18T by this author is another incredible piece of work.

Thank you very much for sharing your skills for free with the community.

PWDT has done i once again. I've absolutely fallen in love with their Z142 as the addon is is extremely high quality. The Flight model is accurate, the sound is brilliant, the detail is incredible. And they have hit very close to home as the plane is very common in Czechia. Not great for towing irl as it is expensive but the aircraft is even aerobatic and flying is worth every Czech crown, Euro or whatever currency you use. It's still a very pure form of flying. The aircraft is very responsive the only flaw it has is that it isn't kind at all. You're able to spin in the direction you're applying rudder to stop the spin. The plane is dangerous for inexperienced pilots but incredibly fun. This is X plane though so a crash won't bother us very much. Go out and fly this thing ! I would be happy to even pay for this aircraft.

In short it is one of the best freeware planes exists for Xplane. It must be in the aircraft library next to Aerobask Robin DR401.
Works well in nonVR and in VR (vulcan b9/ opengl), low FPS impact, hight detailed aircraft. This "walkaround" feature where you can check fuel, and Polish livery its very immersive. Just good work!

What a most excellent plane. Absolutely outstanding in every perceivable way. Textures, sounds, systems, everything modeled with meticulous detail down to the manual! Really blown away by this. Exceeds even most high quality payware planes imho. For me, this plane immediately took up a special place, cause the very same Zlin142 was already my favorite airplane back in the FS2004 days (The FS2004 version was made by Milan Lisner, but also co-authred by Tibor back then). I can even use the very same OK-MNK livery. What a lovely revival of old times that is. And boy has flight simming progressed in the last 16 years.

Congratulations,Tibor & Adrian! Outstanding work, a real jewel!

Fantastic freeware aircraft.  Thanks so much folks - really appreciate your hardwork.  Comprehensive manual is also appreciated too.

Quick question - Does anyone else have to spend a lot of time with constant left roll applied to prevent the a/c always rolling right?  I am sure this is just an issue with my setup/calibration, but I just cannot seem to resolve it.  Sorry to post this here, but don't think you have a support forum.

Thanks
Taz

Response from the author:

Set wind calm, fuel only on the main tanks, and made a test flight. If the Zlin still roll to any direction check your joystick settings, null zones.

I tested this before release, and the Zlin flew straight.

What a great model ! Thank you very much for this one of the best freewares :)

Here is a simple fix to speed indicator (missing 300 inner circle)

Paste to objects folder.

Oooops - can't upload - more than 10 MB.

So you must edit it in Paint by yourself :)

BTW: How did you make formation flight? Multiplayer via Hamachi?

Response from the author:

Thanks for the feedback, airspeed indicator texture will be fixed in the next update. 👍

Our multiplayer session comes from default X-Plane setup, nothing trick or miracle. 😄

It is pretty unbelievable how good this plane is, could easily be a 25 EUR payware. There should be at least a donate link somewhere! I understand if you do it for the love of modelling, or the community, but if you are not crazy rich, lets us give you some financial recognition! The only GA I can compare it to is the JRollon SIAI-Marchetti SF.260. Optimised model with no noticeable effect on frame rates, flies very realistically, and landing it without bouncing is definitely a small challenge (I have no real life experience with the Zlin, but the model is very "sensitive" around the minimum drag speed, needs very fine throttle management to keep stable speed/descent rate on final, which is probably realistic, and the wheels are super bouncy, feels like the shock absorbers are not really absorbing anything, but are simple springs - again, I have no idea about the real plane. Plus it feels like there is barely any ground effect, except from the point where the wheels touch the ground, where the plane wants to float away a bit, if the throttle is not immediately cut - but when you balance these effects then the landing is very rewarding and smooth).

I wish systems were modelled on a REP level, but that should really make it payware. (I would buy it, no question.)

The only minor trouble I had was that it seems like that the audio panel can not be interacted with? I tried listening to ATIS on a VOR, but can not click on the NAV1 NAV2 buttons (or any other button for that matter). Other than that everything seems to work perfectly. Can not stress enough how good the model, texturing, sounds, etc. are.

Plus in the airspeed indicator on the inner ring the top value (at 12 'o clock position) should be 300, not 200 as it is now ;)

Also, in the manual you recommend stability augmentation of 50%. Until now, with other planes, I always used 0%, do you really feel like that setting this to 50% makes your flight model feel more realistic? I tried both 0 and 50%, but since I have no experience with the real plane, I do not know (but there is a definitely noticeable handling difference with the two settings).

Should someone need a POH, here is one in English: https://aerodromclinceni.ro/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Man-de-zbor-Z142-rev8-lb-eng.pdf

Response from the author:

Yes, the Zlin have very sensitive control surfaces. It is not a Cessna! 😉

But please make sure to read included manual, experimental flight model unchecked, and you never flight out of those limits! Climbing and approach at 140 km/h, cruising around 160-180km/h. If you fly slower I can't guarantee the realism because of X-Plane limits.

I have a few houndred flying hours on this type IRL, so I have to say, on my PC with my type of Joysick, if I set those sliders to 50% as described also in the manual, then I can get the best simulation/feelings of the real Zlin aircraft. If you set to anywhere else, I can't guarantee the right feeling that give us this aircraft.

As I experienced during beta-tests, if I set those sliders to any other position and/or experiental flight model checked, the Zlin getting far far away from the reality!

Airspeed texture bug spotted, thanks for the heads up. Will be fixed.

It looks fantastic. Just wow.

However I'm on a Mac and have problems with the plugins somehow. Only a very few cockpit switches can be moved so I can't get it started at all. (But some switches do move).

And a question concerning the artificial horizon please: Mine is brown side up and blue side down. Should earth (brown) be down and sky (blue) be up?

It looks like geniusware. Thanks for such a beautiful piece of hard work for free.

If I can make some livery request please: I'd like some in olive green (especially like East German Air Force please) and another one in "GST" "Gesellschaft für Spot und Technik" East German paramilitary trainer colors please.

Response from the author:

Sorry we haven't any Mac possibilities to test and fix any bug on that op. system.

About artifical horizon: this gauge looks like and works like as the original. There's no any error or bug to fix. Try to accept this Eastern-block style. :)))

However, here is a short movie that recorded myself for these kind of situations :)))

The plane is great and the options are amazing. However, even after pulling the A button in and out, I cannot get the attitude indicator to work..I see the little a in the bottom right of the indicator slide in and out, but the functionality does not change. I also pressed the bottom right button near the gyro compass but the compass doesn't work either way. What's  the secret to getting those instruments to work?

OK, I didn't  see that switch...that did it.

Response from the author:

Switch on 'Transformer' switch on the lower middle panel, and pull out the artifical horizon's cage (marked with red 'A') arm.

W O W!!! Just finished a short flight, touch&go's and stalls (VR of course...) this plane is the first ever in flight simulation that gave me this feel of delay and sluggishness of the controls in slow speeds, the way a real low wing plane behaves (I never flew a real Zlin though).

Didn't read the manual yet, so I don't know why my Attitude Indicator doesn't work, I guess I'll have to read it...

This model is just beautiful, a top notch payware quality, just one of the best out there!

I have neglected X-Plane for a while since I've started Beta testing MSFS2020, now I have a good reason to add some X-Plane time to my schedule...

Thank you so much, this is a real treat for the community!

Response from the author:

Thanks so much. :)

You can use attitude indicator by caging out with the little red arm with "A" sign on it. ;)
